Normal and Neoplastic Hematopoiesis

چکیده
specifically. The book is supported by over 200 references and half again as many personal communications. The high-quality scanning electron micrographs of pollen grains are especially appealing. Willow, mimosa, and dandelion pollen have an architecture as intricate and beautiful as the plant superstructure which supports them. The spiny spherical pollen grains of ambrosia (ragweed) make them visibly as irritating as they are when they contact the mucous membranes. Pollen is not exciting to read unless you are discovering the specific origin of your seasonal sneezing, tearing, conjunctivitis, asthma, and rhinorhea, and that by moving to southern California, you might be able to avoid the problem. The book is expensive, but well done and should serve as a lasting reference to plant biologists, allergists, and even ophthalmologists.

Thrombopoietin and its receptor in normal and neoplastic hematopoiesis
Thrombopoietin was posited to exist in 1958 and cloned in 1994, and in the ensuing two decades we have learned a great deal about the physiology and pathology of the primary regulator of thrombopoiesis. This paper will review the role of the hormone and its receptor, the product of the c-Mpl proto-oncogene, in health and disease, including many unexpected effects in both normal and neoplastic h...
متن کاملDistinct expression patterns of the p53-homologue p73 in malignant and normal hematopoiesis assessed by a novel real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction assay and protein analysis.
The role of the recently identified first p53-homologue, p73, in neoplastic transformation is unknown. To elucidate p73 gene expression in hematopoiesis, we investigated samples from chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and acute myeloid leukemia patients, leukemia cell lines, as well as mature and immature normal hematopoietic cells by real-time quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. We foun...
متن کاملHeparin-Binding Epidermal Growth Factor-like Growth Factor/Diphtheria Toxin Receptor in Normal and Neoplastic Hematopoiesis
Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) belongs to the EGF family of growth factors. It is biologically active either as a molecule anchored to the membrane or as a soluble form released by proteolytic cleavage of the extracellular domain. HB-EGF is involved in relevant physiological and pathological processes spanning from proliferation and apoptosis to morphogenesis. We outline here t...
متن کاملThe kinetics of clonal dominance in myeloproliferative disorders.
To study clonal evolution in myeloproliferative disorders, we used stochastic models of hematopoiesis for mouse and cat, species for which the in vivo kinetics of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) have been experimentally defined. We determined the consequence if 1 HSC became able to survive without the support of a microenvironmental niche while the rest of its behavior did not change. Neoplasti...

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is an extension of marrow beyond its bony casement. It is associated with a number of diseses when the normal function of marrow is disturbed. A large accumulation of extramedullary hematopoiesis may occur at the paravertebral area, mediastinum, spleen and liver. Intrarenal extramedullary hematopoiesis is rare.Only a few cases have been reported of myelofi...
متن کاملEstablishment of a xenograft model of human myelodysplastic syndromes.
BACKGROUND To understand how myelodysplastic syndrome cells evolve from normal stem cells and gain competitive advantages over normal hematopoiesis, we established a murine xenograft model harboring bone marrow cells from patients with myelodysplastic syndromes or acute myeloid leukemia with myelodysplasia-related changes. DESIGN AND METHODS Bone marrow CD34(+) cells obtained from patients we...
